Colonel William Marion Slaughter
Native of Putnam County, GA (Eatonton)
Graduated from William and Mary College
Studied law
Opened law office in Albany, GA in 1852.
Served in Georgia State Senate from Dougherty County for 2 years.
After War Between the States started, he volunteered as a member of the "Doughtery Greys," a Home Guard Unit and was unanimously elected as their captain.
Upon organization of the 51st Georgia Infantry Regiment, his Company was attached and he was promoted to full Colonel and made Commander.
First active duty for the Regiment was a Pocataligo and other points on the Savannah & Charleston Railroad. The next assignment was James Island, SC.
Killed in action May 2, 1863, at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
